Builders in Hammersmith
MVV designs and builds kitchen extensions, loft conversions and full refurbishments in Hammersmith and across W6. Our office is next door in Chiswick, and one team takes each project from the first drawing through planning to the finished home. Hammersmith has Victorian terraces in Brackenbury Village and around Ravenscourt Park, larger houses around Brook Green, and Georgian houses along the river. Most of what we are asked to do here is the same thing in different forms: more space and light at the back of the house, an extra room in the roof, and old services renewed without losing the period character.
Hammersmith homes and what they need
The terraces of Brackenbury Village are mostly small Victorian houses, often two storeys with a back addition and a narrow side return. Around Ravenscourt Park and Brook Green the houses are taller and wider, with more room inside and bigger gardens. Along the river at Upper Mall and Lower Mall are some of the oldest houses in the area, many of them listed. Mansion blocks and converted flats sit between them all.
On a small terrace every metre counts, so the layout matters as much as the build: where the stairs land, how light reaches the middle of the house, and how the kitchen meets the garden. On a larger house the work is more often a full refurbishment, with an extension and a loft planned in at the same time.
Kitchen and house extensions in Hammersmith
Most Hammersmith kitchen extensions fill the side return, run across the back, or wrap round as one room facing the garden. Our guide to kitchen extensions in West London walks through those choices on this kind of housing, rear extension or side return compares the two main routes, and the kitchen extension cost guide sets out the figures.
Our kitchen extensions page shows how we design and build them, and you can try each layout on a home like yours in our free extension planner.
Loft conversions in Hammersmith
On a Hammersmith terrace the usual loft conversion is a rear dormer, sometimes carried over the back addition as an L shaped dormer to fit a bedroom and a bathroom. On some streets a mansard is possible, and whether the council will accept one depends on the street and what has already been built on it. Our guides cover Victorian loft conversions, adding an en suite in the loft and what a loft conversion costs in London, and our loft conversions page explains which type suits which roof.
Planning in Hammersmith
Hammersmith is in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, so applications go to Hammersmith and Fulham Council. Much of W6 is in conservation areas, including Brook Green, the streets around Ravenscourt Park and the riverside. Inside a conservation area a dormer loft conversion is not permitted development and needs planning permission, and changes to the front of the house get close attention. A listed house also needs listed building consent, inside as well as out.
Flats and maisonettes have no permitted development rights, so extending a flat always needs an application. We check the position for your address at the start, prepare the drawings and supporting information, and manage the application along with any party wall agreements.

Working with MVV in Hammersmith
Our office is at Gable House on Turnham Green Terrace, just over the border in Chiswick, where we converted the loft at Seven Oak to add a bedroom, a bathroom and a study. In Fulham, in the same borough as Hammersmith, we designed and built Ellerby Street, a 450 square metre Victorian house. For homes north of Goldhawk Road, see builders in Shepherd's Bush.
Every project runs as one design and build service, with a single team responsible from concept to completion. We carry £10M public and employers' liability cover and plan parking, deliveries and working hours with your street in mind.

Frequently asked questions
- Are you builders near Hammersmith?
- Yes. Our office is at Gable House, 18 to 24 Turnham Green Terrace in Chiswick, next door to Hammersmith, and we design and build kitchen extensions, loft conversions and full refurbishments across W6. One team runs your project from design and planning to the build.
- Will my Hammersmith extension or loft need planning permission?
- Quite often, because much of W6 is in conservation areas, where every dormer loft needs planning permission. Outside them many rear extensions and lofts on houses are permitted development, and a flat or maisonette has no permitted development rights at all. Applications go to Hammersmith and Fulham Council, and we handle them for you.
- Do you work on listed houses by the river?
- Yes. We work on period and listed homes, where listed building consent is needed alongside any planning permission and the original fabric has to be respected. We plan for that in the design and the programme from the start, and our joinery team can make windows, doors and panelling to match.
- How much does a kitchen extension cost in Hammersmith?
- On typical London jobs priced on our estimator in October 2026, a single storey extension of about 20 m² of new floor, flat roofed, came to around £57,000 ex VAT before the kitchen itself. Our minimum for a complete extension project is around £85,000. The figures are indicative, and the free estimate prices your own project.
