Design & build in Streatham

MVV is a high-end design and build contractor working with homeowners across Streatham and the wider SW16 area. From the Victorian and Edwardian terraces near Streatham Common to the larger family homes off the High Road, we help owners reshape period properties for the way they want to live now. As a design and build practice, we look after the whole journey under one roof, from the first design conversation through to the final coat of paint. Our head office is in Chiswick, we carry up to 10 million pounds of public liability cover, and we bring the same care to a single-room renovation as we do to a full home transformation.
Streatham homes and what they need
Much of Streatham's housing is solid period stock, with bay-fronted Victorian and Edwardian terraces, generous semis and the occasional larger detached home set back from the road. These houses were built to last, but they were not designed for open-plan kitchens, home offices or the light-filled living spaces families look for today.
That is where thoughtful design matters. A well-planned rear or side-return extension can open up a dark ground floor, a loft conversion can add a bedroom or study without losing garden space, and a full refurbishment can bring tired wiring, plumbing and insulation up to a modern standard while keeping the character that makes these homes worth owning. We work to suit the proportions and detailing of the original property rather than fighting against them.
The MVV approach
Design and build means a single team is accountable from concept to completion. We start by understanding how you use your home and what you want it to become, then develop a design, manage the planning and approvals, and carry out the work with our own trusted trades. That continuity keeps decisions clear and avoids the gaps that appear when design and construction sit with separate firms.
Our services cover house extensions, loft conversions, full home refurbishments, kitchen renovations, bespoke joinery and listed-building and period-property work. Whatever the scope, the aim is a finish that feels considered and built to last, with the detailing and craftsmanship you would expect from a high-end contractor.
A local project: Milford Mews
Milford Mews in Streatham, SW16, is a recent MVV design and build project. It involved a double-storey extension with an expansive open-plan living room on the lower level and an upper-floor principal bedroom suite housing a private sauna, a bespoke fitted wardrobe and a home office.
The exterior was finished with a brick and timber-clad façade, balancing the warmth of natural materials with the more traditional brickwork of the surrounding street. It is a good example of how careful design can add genuine space and quality to a Streatham home while still sitting comfortably in its setting.

Frequently asked questions
- Will I need planning permission for an extension or loft conversion in Streatham?
- It depends on the size and design of the project and on your property. Some single-storey rear extensions and loft conversions can fall under permitted development, while larger or two-storey schemes usually need a full planning application to Lambeth Council. As a design and build contractor we assess this early and handle the planning and approvals process for you, so you know where you stand before work begins.
- My home is in a conservation area or is a period property. Can you still help?
- Yes. Parts of Streatham fall within conservation areas, and many homes are period properties with features worth protecting. We carry out listed-building and period-property work, and we design extensions and refurbishments to respect original detailing and the wider street. Where extra consents are needed, we factor those into the plan from the outset.
- How long does a typical Streatham project take?
- Timescales vary with the scope, from a kitchen renovation through to a full refurbishment or double-storey extension. The design and planning stages can take a few months before any building starts, and the build itself depends on the complexity of the work. We set out a realistic programme for your specific project rather than quoting a one-size-fits-all figure.
- How do you keep disruption to a minimum while we are living there?
- Many of our clients stay in their homes during the works, so we plan the sequence to keep living space usable for as long as possible and to keep the site clean and secure. Because design and build keeps everything with one accountable team, communication stays simple and you have a clear point of contact throughout.
