Design & build in Hampstead

MVV is a high-end design and build contractor working with homeowners across Hampstead and the wider NW3 area. We take on extensions, loft conversions, full home refurbishments and the careful work that period and listed properties call for, all under a single contract with one point of responsibility from design through to handover. Hampstead has some of the most characterful housing in London, from Victorian and Edwardian terraces to handsome detached villas, much of it inside conservation areas. We are used to the considerations this brings, and we plan each project around the home, the street and the neighbours it sits among. Our office is in Chiswick, and we carry up to 10 million pounds of public liability cover.
The local housing and what it needs
Much of Hampstead sits within conservation areas, and many homes are period properties with original features worth keeping. Work here tends to reward patience and detail rather than speed. Lateral apartments and tall terraced houses each set their own challenges, from protecting period joinery and cornicing to bringing light into rooms that were never designed for open-plan living.
The aim is usually to gain space and modern comfort without losing the character that made the home appealing in the first place. That means specifying materials and detailing that sit naturally alongside the original fabric, and being honest early about what a conservation setting will and will not allow. We would rather raise these points at the design stage than discover them on site.
The MVV approach
MVV brings design and construction together under one contract. You deal with a single team responsible for the drawings, the costing, the build and the finish, which keeps the programme tighter and accountability clear. For Hampstead homes that often means coordinating the additional approvals and specialist detailing that conservation and period work require, and doing so before any tools come out.
We price each project individually after a site visit, and we are open about programme and cost from the start. Our work spans full refurbishments, rear and side extensions, loft conversions, listed-building and period-property renovation, bespoke kitchens and bespoke joinery, so the same team can carry your home from first idea to the last detail.
A Hampstead project: Redington Avenue
On Redington Avenue in the heart of Hampstead, we carried out the design and build of a 150 square metre apartment. The brief centred on open-plan living, so we created a connected living and kitchen area with a custom sliding door, a bespoke kitchen, and a bow-window seating area that looks out over the garden, finished with considered mood lighting.
It is a good example of how we work in NW3: a bespoke kitchen and joinery made for the space, careful attention to light and outlook, and a layout that suits how the owners actually live, delivered as a single, coordinated piece of work.

Frequently asked questions
- Do I need planning permission for an extension or loft conversion in Hampstead?
- It depends on the property and the location. Many Hampstead homes sit within conservation areas, where permitted development rights are often restricted and more applications need full planning permission. We assess this at the design stage and coordinate the approvals your specific project requires before any work begins.
- Can MVV work on listed buildings and homes in conservation areas?
- Yes. We carry out work on period properties and listed buildings, which are common across Hampstead, and we coordinate the additional approvals and specialist detailing these projects require. Where listed-building consent applies, that is factored into the programme from the outset.
- How long does a project in Hampstead usually take?
- It depends on scope. As a guide, a kitchen runs over a few weeks, a single-storey extension or loft conversion typically takes several months, and a full refurbishment longer. Conservation and listed-building approvals can add time at the start, so we confirm a realistic programme in your proposal.
- How do you manage disruption to neighbours on Hampstead's terraced streets?
- Many Hampstead streets are narrow and closely built, so we plan access, deliveries and working hours with neighbours and parking in mind. With design and build under one contract, a single team manages the site from start to finish, which keeps coordination and communication clear throughout.
